# Ask people to sign again on a schedule

> Set a document's renewal interval and use Auto-renew to send new signature requests when each person's next sign-off is due.

Use **Renewal** when people need to sign a document again periodically, even if its content has not changed. Turn on **Auto-renew** to send a new request when renewal is due.

**Who can set this up:** owners and administrators. The document must require a signature. Automatic renewal requests require an active trial or subscription.

## Set up recurring signatures

1. Open **Documents**, select the document, and open **Settings**.
2. Under **Configuration**, turn on **Renewal**.
3. Set **Renew every** to a number and unit: days, weeks, months, or years.
4. Turn on **Auto-renew** if you want ClearPolicy to send requests automatically when due. Leave it off to track due dates and send requests yourself.
5. Click **Save**.

For an annual sign-off, choose **1 year** and turn on **Auto-renew**. Each person's due date is based on their last completion, not a shared calendar date.

## How renewal dates work

ClearPolicy adds the renewal interval to each person's most recent completion date. One month means 30 days; one year means 365 days.

When the interval passes, the document becomes **Renewal due** for that person unless a current request is already pending. With **Auto-renew** on, ClearPolicy checks daily and sends eligible new requests using the current published revision.

Archived people and documents do not receive automatic renewal requests. A current assignment is required.

<Note>
  Changing the renewal interval affects when existing completions become due. A shorter interval can make people due for renewal sooner. Review the warning before saving.
</Note>

## Send the first request

Renewal follows an existing completion. Setting a renewal interval does not replace the first request. [Send the document](/guides/send-requests) to people who have not signed it yet.

If **Auto-renew** is off, review **Renewal due** documents in completion views or the **Outstanding People** report, then send requests when ready.

## Renewal, reminders, and expiry

| Feature            | Purpose                                                                                       |
| ------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Renewal** | Ask for another signature after a previous completion becomes due. |
| **Reminders** | Follow up on a request that is already open. |
| **Request expiry** | Set how long a new request can remain unfinished before it closes. |
| **New revision** | Change the content of the document. Earlier signatures remain tied to their original version. |

See [reminders](/guides/reminders), [request expiry](/guides/request-expiry), and [document updates](/guides/update-document).

## Stop automatic renewal requests

Turn off **Auto-renew** to stop sending new requests automatically while keeping renewal tracking. Turn off **Renewal** if repeat signatures are no longer required. Save the change.

Requests already sent remain open. [Cancel those requests](/guides/manage-requests#close-a-request-that-should-not-be-completed) separately if people no longer need to complete them.
